Third-party product certification is an accredited process used to verify that construction and building products comply with defined standards, specifications, or regulatory requirements.
CMI Certification provides JAS-ANZ accredited construction and building materials product certification under the CMI ProdCert Scheme.
Unlike self-declarations or supplier statements, third-party certification involves assessment by an accredited certification body. This provides confidence to regulators, specifiers, builders, and end users that a product has been objectively evaluated against recognised requirements.
In the construction sector, third-party certification plays a critical role in supporting product acceptance, regulatory compliance, and market access — particularly where products are relied upon for safety, performance, or durability.
The CMI ProdCert Scheme is our most flexible product certification scheme, covering Australia, New Zealand, and many other countries globally. Products are evaluated against the requirements of ISO/IEC 17065 and the applicable standard(s), which may include AS/NZS, AS, NZS, NFPA, ASTM, and ISO standards.
Certification under ISO/IEC 17065 is based on objective evidence, including test reports from recognised testing laboratories such as NATA, IANZ, or ILAC-approved laboratories, together with manufacturing site audits, technical documentation, an approved Product Quality Plan (PQP), and ongoing annual surveillance.accreited

Construction and building materials are often incorporated into permanent works, where failure or non-conformance can have serious safety, financial, or regulatory consequences.
Third-party certification helps provide assurance that products:
Meet relevant Australian, New Zealand, or international standards
Are manufactured under controlled and repeatable conditions
Are supported by appropriate testing, technical documentation, and ongoing surveillance
For manufacturers and suppliers, certification can support specification, procurement, and acceptance across multiple markets.
Certification framework
CMI product certification is conducted in accordance with ISO/IEC 17065, the international standard for bodies certifying products, processes, and services.
This framework ensures certification decisions are:
Independent and impartial
Based on defined certification rules
Supported by objective evidence, including testing and technical evaluation
Depending on the product and applicable requirements, certification may involve assessment against Australian, New Zealand, or international standards.
CMI Certification provides third-party certification for construction and building materials against applicable Australian, New Zealand and international standards.

Product marking plays a vital role in the Product Certification Scheme, ensuring compliance and promoting safety and quality. Marking products with the appropriate certifications and labels helps consumers make informed choices, distinguishing certified products from others in the market. It provides clear evidence that a product has undergone rigorous testing, manufacturing quality controls and meets established standards. Additionally, product marking aids in traceability, allowing authorities to track and identify certified products throughout the supply chain. By adhering to proper marking practices, manufacturers contribute to building trust, protecting consumers, and upholding the integrity of the Product Certification Scheme, ultimately fostering a safer and more reliable marketplace.
