Third-party product certification is an accredited process used to verify that fire protection products comply with defined standards, specifications, or regulatory requirements.
CMI Certification provides JAS-ANZ accredited fire product certification under the CMI ProdCert Scheme.
Third-party certification involves assessment by an accredited certification body. This provides confidence to regulators, certifiers, fire engineers, building owners, and end users that fire products have been objectively evaluated against recognised requirements.
In the fire protection sector, third-party certification plays a critical role in supporting life safety, regulatory compliance, and system performance, particularly where products are relied upon to detect, suppress, contain, or manage fire and smoke in occupied buildings.
The CMI ProdCert Scheme is our most flexible product certification scheme, covering Australia, New Zealand, and many other countries globally. Products are evaluated against the requirements of ISO/IEC 17065 and the applicable standard(s), which may include AS/NZS, AS, NZS, ISO, NFPA, and ASTM.
Certification under ISO/IEC 17065 is based on objective evidence, including test reports from recognised testing laboratories such as NATA, IANZ, or ILAC-approved laboratories, together with manufacturing site audits, technical documentation, an approved Product Quality Plan (PQP), and ongoing annual surveillance.

Fire protection products are installed in permanent works and safety-critical systems, where failure or non-conformance can have serious life safety, legal, and regulatory consequences.
Third-party certification helps provide assurance that fire products:
Meet relevant Australian, New Zealand, or international fire standards
Perform as intended under fire, smoke, or heat exposure conditions
Are manufactured under controlled and repeatable conditions
Are supported by appropriate testing, technical documentation, and ongoing surveillance
For manufacturers and suppliers, certification supports product acceptance, specification, regulatory approval, and market access, particularly where fire authorities or building certifiers require independent evidence of compliance.
Certification framework
CMI fire product certification is conducted in accordance with ISO/IEC 17065, the international standard for bodies certifying products, processes, and services.
This framework ensures certification decisions are:
Independent and impartial
Based on defined certification rules and technical criteria
Supported by objective evidence, including testing and technical evaluation
Depending on the product and applicable requirements, certification may involve assessment against Australian, New Zealand, or international fire standards.
CMI Certification provides JAS-ANZ accredited third-party certification for fire products within our approved scope of accreditation.

Product marking plays a vital role in the Product Certification Scheme, ensuring compliance and promoting safety and quality. Marking products with the appropriate certifications and labels helps consumers make informed choices, distinguishing certified products from others in the market. It provides clear evidence that a product has undergone rigorous testing, manufacturing quality controls and meets established standards. Additionally, product marking aids in traceability, allowing authorities to track and identify certified products throughout the supply chain. By adhering to proper marking practices, manufacturers contribute to building trust, protecting consumers, and upholding the integrity of the Product Certification Scheme, ultimately fostering a safer and more reliable marketplace.
